The AA is best known for its breakdown cover however it also offers travel, car, and home insurance policies to its customers. AA Travel Insurance offers single and annual multi-trip travel insurance policies as well as cover for winter sports and golf trips. AA travel insurance is a brand name of Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited but the travel insurance policies are underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance SA.
Below, we explain the differences between the types of AA travel insurance.
AA’s single trip travel insurance policy is designed to cover a single trip up to 186 days. Single trip travel insurance is good if you are only planning on going away on one or two holidays in a year. If you are planning to go away on two or more holidays a year then you may wish to consider AA’s annual multi-trip travel insurance.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance is designed to cover you for more than one trip in a year and it can be more cost-effective than multiple single trip travel insurance policies. AA's annual multi-trip travel insurance will cover you for multiple trips around the world for up to 62 days per trip but exactly how long you are covered for will vary depending on where you are travelling to and your age.
In the below comparison table we compare the different levels of cover available when you purchase AA travel insurance.
Winter sports travel cover is an additional extra that can be added to your single trip or annual multi-trip AA travel insurance policy. Winter sports travel insurance will ensure you are covered for winter sports activities such as skiing and snowboarding. You may also get additional cover for lost or damaged equipment up to £1,000 per person.
AA travel insurance covers you for coronavirus but there are some limits to the level of cover you can expect. You need to ensure that you read your policy documents carefully to understand exactly what you are covered for before you travel. Below we briefly summarise the coronavirus cover you can expect with an AA travel insurance policy.
With an AA travel insurance policy you can expect to be covered for the following coronavirus-related claims :
It is worth noting that you will not be covered if you are travelling against Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice or if you purchased a travel insurance policy or booked a trip whilst government restrictions were in place and they are still in place when you are travelling. In addition, you will not be able to cancel your trip if there are cases of Covid-19 where you are staying or travelling to and you decide that you no longer want to travel.
The AA says it will try to insure some pre-existing medical conditions as long as you complete the online medical screening form and notify the AA of these conditions before you travel. Failure to notify the AA of these conditions could mean a claim will not be paid. If the AA is unable to insure your pre-existing medical condition then you may need to seek cover with specialist insurance and a list of these insurers can be found on the Money Helper website.
It is worth noting that should your health change or a medical condition arises since taking out your travel insurance policy but prior to travelling, you will need to notify the AA to ensure that your travel insurance cover has not been affected.
In this section of the review, we take a look at some of the general policy exclusions on an AA travel insurance policy. This list is not extensive so you will need to check your policy documents carefully to ensure you know exactly what you are and are not covered for.
An AA travel insurance policy will not typically cover you for the following:
There is no age limit on AA's single trip travel insurance policies but only those aged up to 79 years old can buy an AA annual multi-trip travel insurance policy. For those aged 80 and above it is only possible to purchase a single trip travel insurance policy.

(Quotes correct as of 01/02/24)
The excess on an AA travel insurance policy is £150 for Bronze AA travel insurance policyholders, £80 for AA Silver travel insurance members and £50 for AA Gold travel insurance members.
The policy excess is payable per person but if more than one person insured on a policy is making a claim it will be limited to 2 excess amounts.
If you are an existing AA member and take out a Silver or Gold travel insurance policy the excess will be waived if you make a claim.
If you need to make a claim on your AA travel insurance policy then you can call 0330 1235 751. If you are abroad and require emergency medical assistance, call +44 (0)330 1235 751.
AA Travel Insurance says that you need to contact your travel provider or tour operator before making a cancellation claim to see if they can help you move your trip to a different date or provide you with a full refund. If your travel provider or tour operator cannot help you with this then you can call the AA to make a claim.
AA insurance has a rating of 4.4 out of 5.0 stars on consumer review website Trustpilot from over 27,000 reviews. The reviews include AA insurances as a whole and are not specific to travel insurance. 66% of AA insurance customers have rated it as excellent and 11% rate it as bad.
Some of the reviews that rate AA's travel insurance policies state that they were happy with the underwriters of the policy and the policy cost. Others complain about lengthy claims processes and problems with the receipt of evidence of claims. As with all insurance policies, it is essential that you do your own research to ensure that you are getting the best cover for your needs.
In this section of the review, we compare AA travel insurance to its competitors. We compare the cost of the most comprehensive travel insurance policies with each of the providers and for the purpose of the quotes, we compare the cost for a 30-year-old individual with no underlying health conditions on a 7-night single trip to Europe.
For more information read our Post Office and Staysure* travel insurance reviews.
You may also wish to compare travel insurance policies with a comparison site such as Quotezone* or MoneySuperMarket*. This allows you to compare a range of travel insurance providers all at once to help you find the best policy for your needs. However, it is worth noting that not all comparison sites are whole of market so you may find a better deal elsewhere with another provider.
The excess on the most comprehensive AA and Post Office travel insurance policies is £50 but this is waived with the AA if you are an existing AA member. With both the AA gold travel insurance policy and the Post Office premier policy you get up to £15 million emergency medical cover. The cancellation cover with both policies is the same at £5,000 and you get an additional £500 baggage cover with the Post Office.
There is an individual trip limit of 365 days with a Post Office premier single trip policy compared to the 186-day individual trip limit with AA travel insurance. The trip limits are based on the quotes for a 30-year-old individual and therefore may reduce with age. Both the AA and Post Office travel insurance policies cover coronavirus-related claims but exactly what you are covered for will be detailed in your policy document so be sure to check these carefully.
In the below comparison table, we compare the policy cost of the AA and post office travel insurance policies.
AA | Post Office | |
Policy name | Gold | Premier |
Excess | £50^ | £50 |
Emergency Medical cover | £15m | £15m |
Cancellation cover | £5,000 | £5,000 |
Baggage | £2,500 | £3,000 |
7 night single trip policy cost to Europe (30-year-old individual) | £47.71 | £44.42 |
^waived for AA members
(Quotes correct as of 01/02/24)
The excess is low for both the AA and Staysure* travel insurance policies but if you are an existing AA member then the excess is waived on the Gold policy when you claim. You get unlimited emergency medical cover with Staysure compared to the £15 million cover you get with the AA gold policy. The amount of emergency medical cover you have is something to consider especially if you are travelling to a country that has high medical care costs.
The most obvious difference between the AA travel insurance policy and Staysure's travel insurance policy is the policy cost. As per the comparison table below, it is possible to get more emergency medical cover with Staysure's travel insurance policy but at a lower cost than the AA Gold policy.
There is no maximum age limit on a single trip travel insurance policy with either the AA or Staysure. The maximum single trip limit on a AA Gold travel insurance policy is 186 days compared to 104 days with Staysure*. The maximum single trip limit is likely to reduce depending on the age of the traveller.
AA | Staysure* | |
Policy name | Gold | Signature |
Excess | £50^ | £0 |
Emergency Medical cover | £15m | Unlimited |
Cancellation cover | £5,000 | £10,000 |
Baggage | £2,500 | £5,000 |
7 night single trip policy cost to Europe (30-year-old individual) | £47.71 | £34.99 |
^waived for AA members
(Quotes correct as of 01/02/24)
Overall AA travel insurance offers a good range of cover for travellers. It may be particularly appealing if you are an existing AA member as there are additional benefits such as no excess on claims, depending on the policy you choose.
As there is no upper age limit on the AA's single trip policy it also makes AA travel insurance a good option for those over the age of 65. As with all travel insurance policies, it is important to do your research and read any policy documents carefully so you know exactly what you are covered for and that the policy meets your needs.
